The first ever Grappler Gold Invitational is going down this weekend in Lansing, Michigan at the Lansing Center, as part of the NUWAY Christmas Sparty Weekend.
The inaugural GGI will feature 18 total teams from Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana. The event is an individual format implementing the NFHS National Weight Classes (106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 160, 170, 182, 195, 220, 285).
In depth previews will be released later this week, but an early look at the team race is headlined by two of Michigan's three nationally ranked teams in Brighton and Davison, along with reigning D3 State Champs Dundee who pack a lot of firepower. DeWitt, Eaton Rapids, Clarkston, Clinton, and Warren Woods Tower are other Michigan schools currently ranked top 5 in their division to keep an eye on this weekend.
Three major out-of-squads should be in contention led by returning Indiana dual state champs Brownsburg, currently ranked #3 in the state of Indiana. Evansville Mater Dei, ranked #4 in Indiana, should contend for the top of the leaderboard as well along with Mason, Ohio who is ranked #8 in Ohio's Division 1 Team Rankings.
In all, 13 of the 18 teams are ranked Top 10 in their respective division of their respective state with 10 teams ranked top 5 in their state. The GGI is sure to bring as much talent to an in-season high school tournament that the state of Michigan has ever seen.
