The 19th annual Super 32 tournament was this past weekend, and as always, it proved that it is one of the toughest tournaments in the country. Michigan came away with four placers in the men's division and six placers in the women's division.
Darius Marines (Detroit CC) led the way in the men's group, placing 6th at 157lbs. Michigan also had three 7th-place finishers in Jackson Blum (Lowell), Cory Thomas (Pontiac), and Connor Bercume (Detroit CC).
Thomas and Marines were on a collision course at 157lbs with both guys reaching the quarterfinals after being seeded 3rd and 7th, respectively. In the blood round, Thomas used a reversal as time expired to beat Young (IL), while Marines cruised to a 9-3 win over Dailey (PA). Marines and Thomas met in the consolation quarterfinals, with Marines winning a wild double OT match. A late takedown for Marines sent the match to OT, where he ultimately won 7-5 after a ride out in the first frame and locked hands and escape points in the second frame. Marines would drop his 5th place match to top-10 nationally Henrich (NJ), while Thomas won his 7th place match over Pile (CA).
Jackson Blum (Lowell) and Connor Bercume (Detroit CC) also put together outstanding tournaments. Blum lost to eventual finalist JJ McComas (OK) in the Round of 16 before rattling off three consecutive wins to make the podium. Of note, Blum beat nationally ranked Ziegler (PA) and freshman phenom Youngblut (IA) in the blood round to place. Bercume reached the quarterfinals before falling to nationally ranked Oscar Williams (OK). In the blood round, Bercume was dominant in a 10-2 major decision to lock up All American honors. Bercume's biggest win came over #14 Skove (NJ). Expect both Blum and Bercume to enter the national rankings.
Three Manuel sisters placed in the women's division, including champs Kaili and Amarisa, who took 1st at 148lbs and 175lbs, respectively. Madison Niuwenhuis (100lbs) joined the Manuel sisters as champs, making it three 1st-place finishers for Michigan. In one of the crazier matches of the tournament, #2 ranked Niuwenhuis beat #3 Murphy (IN) 1-1 in the finals. After trading shot clock points, Niuwenhuis showed off some incredible defense, fending off what looked like two guaranteed takedowns for Murphy. Both calls went to review, where it was confirmed that no points were scored. Niuwenhuis won on the criteria of last point scored.
Amarisa Manuel was one of the more dominant wrestlers in the entire tournament, going unscored upon, outscoring her competition 26-0 with three pins. In the finals, Manuel teched Hall (WV) by a score of 12-0.
Kaili Manuel and Mishell Rebisch put on a show of their own in the finals at 148lbs. Manuel came out victorious, winning by a score of 4-3. Manuel, who entered the tournament as the 9-seed, scored with 1 minute remaining on some nice shot defense, rolling Rebisch through for a 2-point exposure. A quick reversal for Rebisch would make the score 4-3, which would be the final.
Belicia Manuel (4th) and Maddie Hayden (8th) also put together outstanding tournaments to reach the podium.
